A Type VIIC U-boat sunk in a training collision with its own target ship
U-580 is a German Type VIIC submarine that sank off Klaipėda, then Memel, while still in training, after colliding with the German target ship Angelburg during a simulated attack. Part of the crew was killed and the rest rescued.
Also known as U 580.

The dive
The Type VIIC boat lies in 40 to 42 m of water near Klaipėda, so the dive is a deep one from the moment the hull comes into view. The collision that sank it left damage to the inner hull that can still be seen where the target ship Angelburg struck the submarine during its training attack.
