What is diving in the Atlantic like?
The eastern Atlantic islands are volcanic, and their diving is lava: arches, tunnels and walls that drop quickly into deep water. The Canary Islands are the most accessible, with lava arches a few metres from shore at El Cabrón and Tenerife, and the concrete figures of Europe’s underwater museum standing at 14 m off Lanzarote & Museo Atlántico. On El Hierro, volcanic walls drop past 100 m beside the volcano that erupted in 2011.
The Azores sit in open ocean, and mobula rays gather in open water at Princess Alice Bank off Pico and Faial each summer. Further south the islands are remote and warm. Adult male and female whale sharks gather together at St Helena, and black triggerfish swarm thick enough to block out the light at Ascension. Across the ocean, Bermuda has around three hundred charted wrecks, most of them shallower than 20 m.
