What is diving in the Indian Ocean like?
The Maldives lead Indian Ocean diving. Each atoll is a ring reef broken by channels called kandus, and the diving is built around them: drifts through the channels, and manta cleaning stations on the reefs inside. Up to two hundred reef mantas barrel-roll inside Hanifaru Bay, whale sharks cruise the outer reef of South Ari in Ari Atoll, and tiger sharks work a cleaning station a few metres off the harbour wall at Fuvahmulah.
Beyond the Maldives, each island group has its own character. Granite boulders stack into swim-throughs in the Seychelles, the reef at Christmas Island ends 30 m from shore and drops over 5,000 m of blue, and at Cocos (Keeling) divers drift out on the falling tide as the whole atoll empties. Whale sharks feed toward Nosy Iranja off Nosy Be from October to December, and Trincomalee & Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka pairs coral gardens with a sunken aircraft carrier.
