North American diving splits by coast. The Pacific side is cold and green, with giant kelp forests at Catalina, Point Lobos and Monterey Bay and playful sea lions around the Channel Islands. The Atlantic and Gulf side is warm: shallow reefs and wrecks in the Florida Keys, sand tiger sharks on the Second World War wrecks off North Carolina, and critter diving in 5 m of water under Blue Heron Bridge.
Mexico holds the biggest animals. Sea lion pups play with divers at Los Islotes near La Paz, striped marlin hunt sardine baitballs off Magdalena Bay, and habituated giant oceanic mantas circle divers at Socorro, which is reached only by liveaboard. Freshwater diving is a speciality too, from the springs of north Florida and the manatees of Crystal River to the nineteenth-century wrecks preserved in the Great Lakes at Tobermory and Thunder Bay.
One destination per theme, picked from the species, dive types, access and site records on each destination page.
