No Name Pinnacle

One pinnacle, 10 m at the top and 40 m at the base

Area photo: ScorpioZZ · CC BY 3.0

A pinnacle off Koh Nang Yuan that runs from 10 m at the top to 40 m at the base, which effectively makes it two dives on one piece of rock. Entry-level divers stay on the shallow structure; divers with deep training get the rest of it. White-eyed moray eels, nudibranchs and bluespot ribbontail rays are all found here, along with the usual reef fish.

The dive

The decision on this site is made before the descent. The pinnacle runs from 10 m down to 40 m, and how much of it you see depends entirely on your training: an entry-level diver can spend a full dive on the top of the rock and never feel short of things to look at, while the lower structure is deep-dive territory with the short bottom time and hard turn-around that implies. Groups drop on the shallow end and work down one side of the rock rather than descending straight to the base.

The life is the local set rather than anything exotic: white-eyed moray eels in the cracks, nudibranchs on the rock for anyone moving slowly, bluespot ribbontail rays on the sand and tropical reef fish across the whole structure. Because the shallow part of the pinnacle carries as much of that as the deep part, the sensible profile is a short look at depth followed by a long, slow ascent up the rock, finishing the dive at 10 m with plenty of gas in hand for the safety stop.

Season follows Koh Tao: No official closure; whale shark sightings peak March-May and September-October, while October-November bring more rain and surface chop.

Know before you go

  • The base sits at 40 m, deeper than a recreational no-stop profile allows for long: set a maximum depth and a turn pressure before the descent, and treat the deep leg as a single pass.
