North Point is the northern tip of Sipadan, where the current splits and speeds up around the corner. A ridge climbs from 40 m to a peak at 12 m and falls away on both sides, and grey reef sharks gather off it in numbers.

The dive

Divers drop onto the ridge and descend to its shoulder at 25 m, hooking in there with a reef hook to watch the grey reef sharks; counts of 20 or more on one dive are common. Bumphead parrotfish shelter in the ridge's lee when the current runs hard, and divers do the same, tucking behind the ridge while the water rushes past.

Season follows Sipadan: Diving runs all year; March to May brings the calmest seas and clearest water, while wind and rain can cloud it from December to February and in August.

Know before you go

  • The current is often moderate and occasionally strong enough that divers must shelter behind the ridge.
  • The point is exposed to swell and wind, so the boat ride out can be choppy.
