Ponta da Piedade Caves
Linked tunnel passages under the Ponta da Piedade rock
A small cave formation at Ponta da Piedade, dived as a ceiling dive through a series of short tunnels in 12 m of water. Daylight stays visible throughout and there are no tight restrictions, so any certified diver can do it, but heavy boat traffic over the headland keeps the site to the low season.

The dive
This is a dive in a semi-enclosed environment inside the caverns of Ponta da Piedade, in about 12 m of water. You swim under a ceiling through several linked tunnel passages rather than into a single chamber, and because daylight stays visible and there are no tight restrictions the site stays within reach of any certified diver rather than needing cave training.
Take a torch. The interest is in what is wedged into the rock rather than out in the water: small fish fill the passages, and lobsters back into the holes in the stone, where they are almost invisible without a light on them. That is why the operators list a torch as part of the kit for this site rather than as an optional extra, and why the dive is worth swimming slowly.

Season follows Algarve: May–Oct is the settled season with the clearest water; Atlantic swell and cold water shut most operations over winter.
Know before you go
- Boat traffic over the headland is heavy enough that operators only run the site in the low season; do not plan on it in high summer.
- It is an overhead environment with a ceiling above you for parts of the swim — carry a torch and stay within sight of daylight.

Do I need cave training to dive the Ponta da Piedade caves?+
No. Daylight stays visible in the passages and there are no tight restrictions, so operators list the site as accessible to all certified divers. A torch is recommended for the crevices.
When can the caves be dived?+
In the low season only. Boat traffic over Ponta da Piedade in summer is heavy enough that centres do not run the site then.
