Adara is a west-coast village of fewer than 200 people, and the diving splits either side of it: coral outcrops standing on a white sand slope on one side, a reef wall on the other. The snorkelling reef sits about 50 metres off the beach, the wall face begins only a few metres out, and dives average around 20 metres with the drop-off running past 40.
Also known as Adara Wall, Adara Hill's Reef.

The dive
The boat drops you in front of Adara village, and which way you turn decides the dive. Left of the village the bottom is coral outcrops standing on a white sand slope; right of it the reef becomes a wall, and the face starts only a few metres out from the beach. Most of the dive sits around 20 metres, with soft corals and large sponges on the wall and snapper, surgeonfish, fusiliers and trevally moving over them.
Work the face slowly and the crevices pay off: lobster and moray eels sit back in the cracks, with pipefish and leaf scorpionfish on the coral outside them. Turtles, Napoleon wrasse and whitetip reef sharks can all be expected here, in water usually clear to somewhere between 10 and 30 metres. The wall carries on past 40 metres, so the ascent is made back up onto the shallow reef, the same coral that lies about 50 metres off the beach and is shallow enough to snorkel.

Season follows Ataúro Island: May–November dry season gives calmer crossings from Dili; December–April monsoon roughens seas.
Know before you go
- The wall runs past 40 metres while the dive itself averages around 20, so set a turn depth before dropping in and watch the gauge along the face.

Questions divers ask
Is Adara a shore dive?+
No. It is dived from a boat: Atauro Dive Resort runs it on their west-coast trips as a two-dive outing with a minimum of three divers. The reef itself is close in, about 50 metres off the beach, and shallow enough there to snorkel.
How deep is the dive at Adara?+
Around 20 metres on average, with the wall dropping past 40 metres below that. Visibility is usually 10 to 30 metres. The reef on top is snorkelling depth, so the last stretch of the dive and the safety stop are spent over coral rather than open water.
