Claires Corner

The structure here is a set of coral ridges lying at right angles to the drop-off, so the natural route is to follow one out from the reef and let it lead you to the edge. Depths reach 25 m or more, which is what makes this an advanced dive rather than a general one, and the sensible plan is to take the deepest part of the profile early on the way out.

A school of bigeye trevally lives on this corner and is usually the first thing you meet at the end of a ridge. Beyond them, swim out into the barracuda holding over the edge and look down: grey reef sharks patrol the depths below the drop-off, and they are seen from above rather than approached. Turn before the ridge runs out and come back the way you came, so the profile steps up gradually instead of in one long ascent.

Timing matters more than route on this site. It is at its best on the incoming tide, or at any point when the current is flushing clean ocean water across the corner, so the dive gets planned around that window rather than around the clock. If the tide is wrong the ridges are still there, but the water on them is not the same water, and the school and the sharks are the part of the site that depends on it.
