La Tête de Mort

The site is not one rock but several heads standing off the south side of the Gulf of Ajaccio, each rising from a floor at 40 m to the surface or to a few metres below it. Because the tops come so close to the surface the boat can put you in above one of them, and you descend down its face rather than along a line into open water. Pick a working depth before you go in: the full face is 40 m from top to bottom, so the plan decides whether this is a deep dive or a mid-depth one.

The heads together form a drop-off, and the dive is a matter of moving along and between them at your chosen depth, then stepping up the rock as gas and no-decompression time run down. The finish is the easy part: the rock reaches the surface, so you can make the safety stop against it with something to look at instead of hanging in open water. One customer's log at the Porticcio centre mentions dolphins seen from the boat rather than underwater, so treat them as a possibility on the crossing, not a feature of the dive.
