Yatush Wreck

A small shore-reachable wreck on coral-grown ground at 30 m

Area photo: Yonatan Dodin · CC BY 4.0

The Yatush is a small wreck off Eilat's shore, sitting at 30 metres with a bed of coral grown up around it. It is reached from the beach rather than by boat: navigation out to the position is simple, and divers either surface-swim over it before dropping or submerge at the entry and follow the bottom out if their air consumption allows.

Also known as Yetush, יתוש.

The dive

Everything starts on the beach. Navigation to the wreck from shore is straightforward enough that you can choose the method: swim out on the surface to save gas and drop once you are over the position, or submerge at the entry and follow the bottom out if your air consumption is good. Either way the descent finishes at 30 metres, so the swim is planned around the depth where the bottom time will be spent.

The wreck is small, and the coral bed grown up around it is as much of the dive as the hull is, so the circuit is short: a look over the structure and the coral on and beside it, then the turn for home. Thirty metres on a shore dive leaves little margin and there is no boat overhead to shorten the way back, so the ascent begins with the return swim still to do and the depth is shed along the outbound line rather than saved for the end.

Know before you go

  • At 30 metres from a shore entry there is no boat overhead, so gas reserves and no-decompression time have to cover the swim back as well as the time on the wreck.
