Great White Wall is a near-vertical face on Rainbow Reef, in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, entered through a short tunnel rather than over the lip. The white coral that names it covers the wall between 15 and 65 metres, and the face takes on a more iridescent lavender hue deeper down. Most of the dive is spent between 15 and 25 metres.

The dive
The dive starts inside the reef rather than on the face. A short tubular cave at 15 metres takes you through and opens onto the open wall, so your first view is already partway down a vertical drop instead of over the top of it. Square-spot anthias are prevalent around the site, and the face below falls away well past the range of a recreational plan.
From the exit you work the wall with the current behind you, holding 15 to 25 metres. The white coral that names the site blankets an almost vertical face, broken by little splashes of orange, green and red, and it runs from 15 metres down to 65. Deeper down the wall takes on a more iridescent lavender hue, which is a reason to look down rather than to go down. There are swim-throughs along the way, and the current sets the pace, so the route is a one-way pass along the face rather than a loop.
Currents here are variable and tidal, so the dive is timed to a window rather than taken whenever a boat arrives: the exchange decides both the entry and the direction of the drift. Rainbow Reef lies in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, and boats reach the wall from either shore. The reef as a whole is cited in Fiji's Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for the national significance of its patch reef and marine ecosystem.

Season follows Rainbow Reef & Namena: The May-Oct dry season gives the strongest coral color and clearest water; Nov-Apr brings warmer seas but cyclone risk and more rain.
Know before you go
- The white coral runs to 65 metres and the face keeps going below any recreational plan, so set a hard depth limit before you drop through the tunnel.
- Current in the Somosomo Strait is variable and tidal, so the dive is timed to a window and you go the direction the water is going.

Questions divers ask
How deep is the Great White Wall?+
The usual recreational profile runs 15 to 25 metres. The wall itself is far deeper: the white coral formation covers depths from 15 down to 65 metres, so the limit is the dive plan rather than the reef.
Do I need an advanced certification to dive it?+
In practice, yes. The site is rated intermediate to advanced: the entry is a tunnel at 15 metres that opens onto an open wall face, and a variable tidal current decides the direction of the drift. Advanced Open Water with drift experience is the sensible baseline.
