Buda Cave
A 60 m wide cave mouth with sleeping nurse sharks inside

A cave on the west side of the reef around Naivaadhoo Island in Haa Dhaalu, with a mouth 60 m across rising from 30 to 25 m. Divers take a torch 15 m inside to find sleeping nurse sharks and whitetip reef sharks, plus marble rays dozing behind rocks on the south side, then exit up the wall with napoleon wrasse for company.

The dive
The cave sits on the west side of the reef around Naivaadhoo Island. You descend to the mouth, which is 60 m across and rises from a depth of 30 m to 25 m, so the whole entrance is at the deep end of a recreational profile and the bottom time is short. Switch your torch on before you go in: the dive ventures 15 m into the cave, and the light is what finds the sleeping nurse sharks and the whitetip reef sharks wandering through.
Head toward the south side of the cave, where at least four or five marble rays doze behind two large rocks. Keep your fins up off the floor so the sand stays down and the animals stay put. Then turn back toward the light of the mouth and head out, watching your depth and remaining no-decompression time as you leave the overhead and pick up the wall outside.
The ascent is up the wall outside the cave. Curious napoleon wrasse tend to follow you up the wall, and you may spot a turtle and a few mantas as you come shallow. Having spent the deep part of the dive at 25 to 30 m in the cave, take the wall slowly and use it for a long, gradual ascent to the safety stop rather than heading straight up into open water.

Season follows Haa Alif & Haa Dhaalu Atolls: January to April is calm and clear with visibility to 30 m; the far north is dived most of the year, with June and July the roughest months of the southwest monsoon.
Know before you go
- It is an overhead environment: carry a torch, keep the exit in sight, and stay within the guided 15 m penetration.
- The mouth sits at 25 to 30 m, so no-decompression time is short: plan the cave first and the wall second.
