Asaji
A seamount 2 km offshore, dived at slack water for pelagics

Kushimoto's open-ocean point, a large submerged seamount about 2 km off Yokoshima with a cluster of spires standing off its northern side. The top comes up to around 7 metres, the surrounding bottom sits near 33 metres, and the current can run hard enough that boats wait for slack water before divers go in.
Also known as 浅地.

The dive
Asaji is a single large seamount with a group of spires rising to its north. The shallowest peak reaches about 7 metres and the bottom around the structure sits near 33 metres, dropping away deeper once you leave the reef, so the dive is planned as a descent onto the top and a working of one flank rather than a circuit. Boats put divers in at slack water; the current here is what decides whether the point runs at all.
The rock itself is broken enough to swim through. Three places on the northern side pass under large boulders, and on the south there is a long gallery-like tunnel. Between those and the spires the site holds structure at every depth from the 7-metre peak down, and the profile operators publish for the point runs from 6 to 35 metres.
The reason to come is what passes offshore. In summer bonito, amberjack, yellowtail and mahi-mahi show near the surface, and hammerhead sharks, pygmy devil rays and spotted eagle rays are seen occasionally rather than reliably. One Kushimoto operator calls Asaji the area's representative open-ocean point and two others list it first among their outer-sea sites; none of them report those animals at any other point here.

Season follows Kushimoto: Jul–Oct is warmest with the widest range of tropical strays; winter drops to 16°C but gives the clearest water on the reef.
Know before you go
- Current can run strong on the seamount; dives are timed for slack water and the boat calls it off when it is running, so build the day around the tide rather than the schedule.
