Andonohana

The original longfin grouper reef, open only in late autumn

Area photo: Yudai_photography · CC BY 4.0

A seasonal macro point of sand and cobble off the cape of the same name, dived only in a short window around October and November. Rock and sand divide cleanly across a 15-23 m profile, and the terrain is plain by Kushimoto standards: divers come for the animals, headed by the original longfin grouper reef.

Also known as Ando no Hana, アンドの鼻.

The dive

Boats run the point only when the late-autumn window is open, and the ground you land on is straightforward: rock on one side, sand on the other, the two clearly divided, with the profile running between 15 and 23 m. Operators are direct that the terrain is not the reason to come. The draw is a single feature known as the original longfin grouper reef, where a large longfin grouper holds station inside a cloud of pajama cardinalfish and golden sweepers dense enough that the grouper is often the last thing you pick out.

The rest of the dive is searching. Worked carefully, the sand gives up Wheeler's shrimpgobies and, less often, angelsharks, while the rocky ground is loose boulder that shelves away to the north. The point is only in the rotation for that short late-autumn window, and the trade operators describe is exactly that: few chances to dive it, but a high rate of rare finds, animals that do not turn up elsewhere in Kushimoto.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Andonohana?+

The point runs between 15 and 23 m. Rock and sand are clearly divided, and the boulder ground slopes away towards the north, so most of the searching is done on the shallower sand.

When can you dive Andonohana?+

It is a winter-limited point, in the rotation only for a short window around October and November. Outside that window Kushimoto operators dive the other points instead.
