Negril & Bloody Bay

A beginner cavern and reef arches on Jamaica's calm west coast

Negril sits at the far western end of Jamaica, home to Seven Mile Beach and Bloody Bay on the island's calm west coast. More than 20 dive sites line its seven miles of coastline, where intricate reef structures form caverns, caves, ledges, walls and arches between 9 and 27 m (30 to 90 ft), with plane and tug wrecks among them. The draw is the Throne Room, a beginner cavern lined with elephant-ear sponges.

About diving in Negril & Bloody Bay

The dive centres sit along Seven Mile Beach, some of them inside the resorts, and the sites are spread over the seven miles of coast, more than 20 of them with a spread of difficulty. Many of the reefs are a short boat ride out, and Frenchman's Hole is normally entered straight from the shore. Being on the west coast of the island, Negril generally has calm water. The reefs are protected within the Negril Marine Park, declared in 1998 and running for about 160 km² (62 sq mi) from the Davis Cove River in Hanover to St. John's Point in Westmoreland.

The reef structures are intricate and vast, cut into caverns, caves, ledges, walls and arches, and the best of them sit at the Throne Room, Arches, Kings Fish Point, Long Wall, Shark Reef, Fantasy Reef, Golden Gate and Treasure Reef. Colourful sponges and sea fans cover the structures, with parrotfish, barracuda and eagle rays over the reef. The Throne Room holds an abundance of marine life at only 18 m (60 ft). Wreck dives add Deep Plane, Shallow Plane and Tug boat/Pete, plus a small airplane wreck on Archers Reef.

Negril suits newer divers. The water is warm and generally calm, the sites range in difficulty, and the signature cavern is rated for beginners, while Frenchman's Hole is rated an advanced dive. Some resort centres serve their own hotel guests only. Divers planning around visibility should avoid the rainy months from July to October, when rain clouds the water.
