Bubble Cave
A dark cave you can surface inside, under large stalactites
Area photo: Pseudopanax at English Wikipedia · Public domain
Bubble Cave is one of the caves where Niuean sea kraits lay their eggs, so the rocks inside usually hold a large number of snakes out of the water. Niue Dive rated it among the island's most popular sites and gave the profile as 5 to 24 metres. A second cavern leads out onto reef with anemone fish and a range of macro life.

The dive
The way in is a dark cave, and it leads to an enclosed chamber you can surface inside, hung with large stalactites and completely cut off from land. This is one of the caves where the Niuean sea kraits lay their eggs, so expect a large number of them up on the rocks inside, out of the water rather than swimming past you.
Back under, a second cavern gives access to the reef and the dive changes character: anemone fish in their hosts, and a range of macro life on the rock for anyone diving with a close-up lens. Niue Dive gave the profile as 5 to 24 metres across the whole site and rated it for all levels, so the shallow reef takes up most of the dive once the cave section is done.
Background
Bubble Cave has been filmed for television: it appears about 33 minutes into Episode 2, 'Reptiles and Amphibians', of the BBC series Life, in a sequence made with the help of Ian and Annie, the previous owners of Niue Dive. The cave is one of the places where Niuean sea kraits come to lay their eggs.

Season follows Niue: Jul-Sep is peak season, combining calm seas with humpback whales; the Nov-Apr cyclone season brings more swell and rougher boat access.
Know before you go
- The air chamber is completely cut off from land, so the only way out is the way you came in — stay with the guide and keep track of the entrance.
- Sea kraits gather on the rocks inside the chamber in numbers. They are highly venomous but placid; Niue Dive reported no one has ever been bitten in the water anywhere on Niue — keep your hands off.
