Chun Zumbul Deep is a boat dive on Playa del Carmen's offshore reef, published as a deep dive with an average depth of about 26 m. The reef here is not continuous: three separate plateaus of coral are divided by intervals of sand banked up into dunes. Strong current is the condition the site is described under, so it is worked as a deep drift rather than a reef you swim around at your own pace.

The dive
You enter from the boat over open water and descend straight to the reef, which lies at an average of about 26 m. There is no shallow warm-up here: the profile is deep from the moment you leave the surface, and with strong current running the team needs to be together and settled before the first plateau comes into view.
From there the current does the work. The dive crosses three distinct reef plateaus, each one giving way to a stretch of sand ridged into dunes before the next block of coral rises again, and those sand intervals are the markers that tell you where you are in the dive. Bottom time at 26 m is short, so the pace is set by the current and your gas rather than by how long you would like to spend on any one plateau, and the ascent comes in open water at the end of the drift.
