Sponge-covered reef where legend puts Francis Drake's lost ship
Drake Island is the best-known dive at Portobelo, a short boat ride out of the bay. Its reef is thick with sponges and reef fish, and a coral wall runs along the island. Legend holds that the remains of Francis Drake's sunken ship have lain off the island since 1596.
Also known as Drake's Island, Isla de Drake, Isla Drake.

The dive
The island's reef is one of the most colourful around Portobelo, with an abundance of sponges and colourful fish. Parrotfish, boxfish, barracudas, groupers, pipefish and moray eels live along a coral wall that goes down to nearly 30 m (100 ft), and legend places the remains of Francis Drake's sunken ship at about 21 m (70 ft).
