Flamingo Bay

Sheltered fringing reef with a sponge-covered wall

Area photo: audi_insperation · CC BY 2.0

Flamingo Bay is a fringing reef inside the Grenada Marine Park, dived from about 5 to 18 metres. A slope encrusted with whip coral, colourful sponges and sea fans carries the fish life at the deeper end, while the protected reefs in the shallows of the bay are good for snorkelling as well.

Also known as Flamingo Bay Reef.

The dive

The dive follows the fringing reef along the bay, starting on the shallow top of the slope at around 5 metres and working down towards 18. Blue clouds of chromis glide along the slope, with big-eyed squirrelfish and shy jackknife fish tucked into the crannies, and the fish life along this stretch is dramatically abundant.

Lower down, the slope becomes a wall encrusted with whip coral, colourful sponges and sea fans, and this is where grouper, jacks and rays sit. Coming back up over the top of the reef leaves plenty of shallow time in the protected part of the bay — the same shallow reefs that snorkellers use, and shallow enough to take in from the surface while the divers finish their stop.

As part of the Grenada Marine Park, the bay is managed water, and the reef sits close enough to the surface that most of the dive is spent in the bright, easy end of the profile rather than at the bottom of the wall. That makes it a straightforward second dive of the day, or a first one for divers who have not been in the water for a while and want an unhurried reef to get sorted on.

Questions divers ask

Is Flamingo Bay good for beginners?+

Yes. The reef runs from about 5 to 18 metres in a protected bay, and the shallow sections are good enough for snorkelling, so it works as an easy first or second dive of the day.
