Amfiteatre dive

Amfiteatre is a drop-off named for one section of wall that leans out in an overhang. Pongo runs it as a 20 to 40 m dive and calls it easy for all diving categories, and the catalogue is explicit that the same terrain serves very experienced divers and beginners depending only on how deep you take it. Corals, schools of fish and spiny lobsters of every size are on the face.

The dive

Pongo starts the dive at about 4 m over sea grass, which gives away nothing, and then the ground ends at the edge of the drop-off. The wall leads back toward the island before cutting away to the right into the overhang that gave the site its name. Pongo lists the profile as 20 to 40 m, and the catalogue's own point is that the depth you choose is the only thing making this an advanced dive or an easy one.

The face carries corals and schools of fish, and spiny lobsters of every size sit on it, out in the open as well as back in the rock; one crack in particular holds moray or conger eels. Pongo works the wall in passes at several depths rather than in one line, and singles out a section thick with nudibranchs and fireworms, plus the giant tun shells that dig into the sand here.
