Felipe's Place is a boat dive on a broad coral platform off Providencia, hard and soft corals and sponges running out to a cliff wall on the western side. A statue called Christ Under the Waters, now damaged, stands at 24 m, and past small caves the wall deepens to a crevice that forms a passable tunnel. PADI lists the site to 60 m and classes it as drift, reef and wall.

The dive

Boats drop you over the platform, and that platform is the dive: hard and soft corals and sponges spread across it, the sponges in enough different colours to be worth slowing down for. PADI classes the site as drift as well as reef and wall, so plan on moving with the water rather than swimming a fixed circuit, and let the shape of the ground set your route.

The western edge is where the platform stops and the bottom falls away down a cliff face; PADI lists the site to 60 m, deeper than any recreational profile, so most teams work along the lip and turn back onto the reef. The statue known as Christ Under the Waters stands at 24 m and is now damaged. Small caves near the wall hold invertebrates and cryptic fish, and as the wall deepens it leads to a crevice forming a tunnel that PADI says can be traversed to 12 m. Sharks, whales, dolphins and turtles are what PADI lists for the site.

Know before you go

  • PADI lists the site to 60 m and the platform edge gives few depth cues, so agree a hard maximum before you drop and keep checking it on the wall.
  • No current rating is published for the site and PADI classes it as a drift dive, so ask the operator about the day's conditions before you go in.
