Hot water bubbling up through the sand at 5 to 15 m

A shallow geothermal dive where hot water bubbles up through a sandy bottom and the cracks and vents change shape and size between visits. It is a fifteen-minute boat ride from the beach, the current is not strong, and the published depths run from about 5 m to the low teens, which makes it an easy second dive of the day.

The dive

You reach the site on a fifteen-minute boat ride and drop in over sand rather than onto a reef edge. The bottom is the point of the dive: geothermal vents push hot water up through the sandy floor in streams of bubbles, and the cracks and vents themselves change shape and size between visits, so the layout you swim over is not the one the last group saw. The easiest way to work the site is to move slowly and low, feeling the temperature change before you see the sand moving.

From there it is a slow sweep of the shallows between about 5 m and the deeper end of the site, which the two published listings put at 13 m and 15 m. Current is not a factor in normal conditions, so the pace is yours and the profile stays shallow enough for a long dive. Nothing about the site rewards covering ground quickly, and the depth leaves gas and no-decompression time in hand throughout, which is why it tends to be dived as the second dive of the day.

Season follows Pulau Weh: Oct–Apr is the settled season with the clearest water; June to September brings wind and swell that close the exposed pinnacles.

Know before you go

  • The water venting from the sand is hot at the source, so stay off the bottom around the bubble streams rather than kneeling or settling into them.

How deep is Vulcano?+

Shallow. The site starts at about 5 m, and the two published listings give the deep end as 13 m and 15 m, so the whole dive sits well inside recreational limits and inside no-decompression time.

Is Vulcano suitable for beginners?+

Yes. It is shallow, the boat ride is short and the current is not strong in normal conditions, so an Open Water diver can dive it.
