Bahuluang Wall

Limestone and white sand, a wall to 35 m, rarely any current

Area photo: Fakhrizal Setiawan · CC BY-SA 4.0

Bahuluang Wall lies off the west side of Selayar, about 20 minutes by boat from Bone Taringan Beach: limestone rock and white sand, a slope that turns into a wall, and a maximum depth of 35 m. Current is usually absent and mild at worst, which makes it the calmer counterpart to the east-coast sites. Turtles, whitetip reef sharks, napoleon wrasse and giant trevally are all logged here.

The dive

The boat ride from Bone Taringan Beach takes about 20 minutes, which puts the site on the opposite side of Selayar from the Pattumbukan cluster. The ground is limestone rock and white sand — a slope first, then a wall running down to a maximum of 35 m, so you can pick a depth and stay on it. Current is the notable part: usually there is none at all, and when it does run it stays mild.

That makes it an easier dive than the depth suggests, and one for looking rather than covering ground. Turtles, whitetip reef sharks and eagle rays are logged along the face, with napoleon wrasse and grouper on the rock; fusiliers and rainbow runners pass in numbers, and giant trevally and tuna work behind them. Logged visibility runs from 15 m in April and June to 30 m in September, in 27 to 29°C water.

Season follows Takabonerate & Selayar: Apr–Nov is the season; the north-west monsoon makes the crossing from Makassar impractical from December to February.

Know before you go

  • The wall bottoms at 35 m and the slack water makes it easy to sink deeper than planned — set a depth on the way down and watch the computer.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Bahuluang Wall?+

The slope and wall run to a maximum of 35 m. Most of the dive can be spent shallower than that, since the structure is a face you follow at whatever depth you choose.

Is there current at Bahuluang Wall?+

Usually none. The site's description notes no current most of the time and mild current on occasion, which makes it the gentler of the Selayar sites listed.
