Napoleon Reef
A one-way drift along the atoll's southeast outer reef

An outside-reef drift on the southeast side of South Malé Atoll, run one way along a gentle but quite steep slope. Depending on how hard the water moves it becomes a long drift or a short one, at a medium one-to-two-knot pace, over a profile of 20 m average and 25 m maximum — an easy dive with encounters at every depth.

The dive
The boat drops you on the outer reef and the current does the routing: this is a one-way dive, long or short depending on how hard the water is running, along a slope described as gentle but quite steep. You hold your depth around the 20 m average, with the reef bottoming out at 25 m, and let the atoll's southeast face scroll past.
It is rated an easy dive despite the medium, one-to-two-knot current — the drift does the work, and there is no channel mouth or deep drop-off to manage. The promise is encounters at every depth along the slope, which makes it a sensible pick for divers building drift experience before the atoll's stronger channel sites.

Season follows South Malé Atoll: The dry northeast monsoon, late December to May, is the main season; mantas clean May to August and whale sharks are reported in August on the outer reef.
