The Aquarium
Walk-in shore dive over a sandy bay and shallow fringing reef
Area photo: TMbux · CC BY-SA 3.0
A shore dive straight off the beach in front of the Juara Scuba Academy dive centre. The Aquarium is a sandy-bottomed bay of 2 to 5 metres that runs out into shallow fringing reef and bottoms out around 8 metres. Current is mild when it runs at all, which keeps the diving shallow, slow and undemanding from the walk-in onwards.

The dive
The dive starts on foot: you kit up at the dive centre, walk down the sand and wade in, so there is no boat ride, no descent line to find and no drop into blue water. The first stretch is open sand in two to five metres, which suits skills and first sea dives — there is nothing below you to damage, nothing to lose sight of, and a bad buoyancy moment costs you nothing.
Swim out and the sand gives way to shallow fringing reef, with the deepest water on the site at around eight metres. At that depth a tank lasts a long time, so the dive is generally paced slowly along the reef edge and back over the sand. A mild current runs on some days; swim into it on the way out so that it helps you back towards the beach for the walk-out exit.

Questions divers ask
How deep is The Aquarium?+
The bay is 2 to 5 metres over sand and the site bottoms out at about 8 metres, so a dive here stays shallow from start to finish.
Can you dive The Aquarium from shore?+
Yes. It sits in front of the Juara Scuba Academy dive centre and you walk straight in off the beach, so no boat is needed.
