Grotta dei Gamberi

Walls that seem to move under thousands of massed shrimp

A cave dive off Punta Galera, entered where a lava rockfall ends on sand at 40 metres and the entrance arch opens in the rock. Inside, the walls and the ceiling appear to move: the effect comes from thousands of small shrimp massed over the stone. The floor rises gently through the cave toward the exit, and the shallow end of the dive is around 27 metres.

The dive

The dive follows the lava tongue of Punta Galera down to a rockfall that ends on sand at 40 metres, where the entrance arch opens. You go in along the left wall, which bends away from the light past sponge-covered rock; at the darkest point of the wall, in the fissures of a large boulder, conger eels wind through the cracks and forkbeards hold still in the beam of the torch.

Past the bend the sandy floor begins to rise and the walls narrow into a low, wide tunnel that leads to the exit. A terrace of rock on the roof here is crawling with shrimp, the massed Plesionika that give the cave its name, in numbers that make the stone itself look as though it is moving. Three further openings break the cave wall and let light filter in on the colour. Turning right you get the blue tear of the entrance and a pale clearing where feather duster worms are out.

A short passage brings you back out to the rockfall, among big grouper and silver seabream, and the dive carries on along the Punta Galera wall, where circling a few of the boulders can turn up a spiny lobster out walking. Depth sets the shape of the whole dive: the deepest point is the cave mouth at the start, so the profile only gets shallower from there.

Season follows Ustica: May–Oct brings the warmest water, around 18–26°C, and the best visibility; many dive centers close over winter.

Know before you go

  • The dive starts at its deepest point, 40 metres on sand at the cave mouth, so gas and no-decompression time have to be planned before you drop rather than managed after.
  • Sections of the cave are dark and narrow enough to close in around a diver; carry a torch, keep the group in sight, and dive it only with a guide who knows the route.

Questions divers ask

How deep is the Grotta dei Gamberi dive?+

The dive centre gives it as 40 to 27 metres. You enter at the deepest point, on sand at 40 metres at the foot of the rockfall, and the floor of the cave rises through the passage toward the exit, with the shallow end of the dive at around 27 metres.

Do you need cave experience for the Grotta dei Gamberi?+

The dive centre states that the site calls for a degree of experience. It is a short overhead section rather than a technical cave dive, but the 40-metre entry, the dark passages and the confined tunnel put it beyond a newly certified diver.
