Chapeirões Atlântida

Channels through coral towers to a chamber that holds 15 divers

Atlântida is a little-visited coral formation in the Abrolhos region, and the dive runs through it rather than around it. Passages and channels between the towers lead to a lounge large enough for about 15 divers, on a profile that ranges from 8 to 32 metres. Little beyond that depth range and the shape of the structure has been published.

Also known as Chapeirao Atlantida, Atlântida Cliff.

The dive

The formations provide a dive of several passages and channels, worked through until they open into a lounge where almost 15 divers can fit. Depth across the site ranges from 8 to 32 metres, so the route has real vertical range in it and the deep end is worth spending early: gas and no-decompression time go quickly at the bottom of that spread, and the 8 metre end of the range is the natural place to finish the dive.

Atlântida is described as a little-visited spot, and it shows in the record: beyond the depth range and the layout of passages, chamber and towers, nothing has been published for the site. Current, visibility, water temperature and the species you might see all come from the archipelago's general conditions rather than from any survey of this formation, so treat the crew's briefing on the day as the operative plan.

Season follows Abrolhos Archipelago: Aug–Oct pairs peak humpback whale season with fair diving; visibility is clearest and warmest Dec–Mar, while Apr–Jul river runoff lowers it to around 10 m.

Know before you go

  • At 32 m the no-decompression clock runs fast; set a turn pressure and a bottom time before you drop, and work back up the structure rather than extending deep.
  • The passages and the chamber put coral overhead: keep the guide and an exit in sight, and control buoyancy through the narrower channels.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Chapeirões Atlântida?+

Depth on the site ranges from 8 to 32 metres. That bottom end sits past a standard recreational profile, so it suits divers already comfortable below 30 metres and happy working through passages and a chamber.

Is Atlântida a busy dive site?+

No — the one published description calls it a little-visited spot in the Abrolhos region. Everything here is dived from liveaboards running a fixed itinerary, so whether it appears on the schedule is the crew's call on the day.
