The Bull Ring
Bull sharks work a bait drum in open water; tiger sharks turn up in warmer months.

The Bull Ring is a baited drift dive run in open water off Aliwal Shoal, away from the reef itself, where a bait drum draws in bull sharks along with seasonal tiger sharks and blacktip sharks. The operator that runs it keeps the exact position undisclosed and sets the drift from current and conditions on the day rather than a fixed mark. Depths run 15 to 30 metres and it is booked only as an Advanced dive.

The dive
The Bull Ring is worked off the shoal rather than on it: a bait drum in open water is the draw, not a reef feature, and the boat follows the drift rather than anchoring over a fixed mark. The operator that runs it keeps the exact position undisclosed, picking the line from the day's current, and the dive is booked as Advanced-only with a briefing on how to hold position and behave around the bait before anyone gets in.
Bull sharks are the main event and can arrive in numbers around the drum, working the current for scent the way they would around any natural food source. Blacktip sharks are the species most consistently seen on baited dives on the shoal, and tiger sharks show up too, more often in the warmer months. The operator that runs the site names individual bull sharks it sees there, among them one it calls Smiley.
Depths run 15 to 30 metres, away from any of the shoal's mapped reef features, so there is no fixed structure to reference and the group works the drift together around the drum. It works best with a strong current to carry the bait scent, and gets uncomfortable in a big swell.

Season follows Aliwal Shoal: The operator gives December-April as the season, inside the shoal's wider November-April tiger/whale shark window. Blacktips are the most consistent species on baited dives here.
Know before you go
- No fixed reef feature to reference: the dive drifts on open water over the current for the day, so group discipline matters more than on a reef dive.
- Bull sharks and, seasonally, tiger sharks work close around the bait drum; divers hold the position and behaviour set in the pre-dive briefing rather than approaching or reaching for animals.
- Best conditions are a strong current, which also means the drift can run fast and long; an SMB and reel are standard for the ascent.
Questions divers ask
Is this the same as the ragged-tooth sharks at Aliwal Shoal's Cathedral and Raggies Cave?+
No. Ragged-tooth (sand tiger) sharks rest in reef caves through the southern winter and are unrelated to this dive. The Bull Ring is a baited open-water drift for bull sharks and, seasonally, tiger sharks, a different species from the ragged-tooth.
What certification do you need for the Bull Ring?+
The operator runs it as an Advanced dive only. It is a drift in open water to 30 metres with large sharks working a bait drum, away from any of the shoal's mapped reef features.
