The Shoulder is Mafia's adrenaline dive: a site run in a very strong current, with divers gliding across the bottom rather than swimming it. Maximum depth is around 26 m. Operators are blunt that it is for experienced divers only, and the plan revolves around getting in and getting down fast.

The dive
This is the one site on Mafia dived purely for the water moving through it. The current here is very strong and the dive is run with it: a fast entry, straight down to the bottom, and then a glide across the ground at up to around 26 m with the flow doing all of the work. There is no swimming back against it, which is why operators put a hard experience bar on the site.
Everything depends on getting in at the right moment and getting down quickly, so the boat's timing and the group staying together off the entry matter more than anything you do underwater. Once you are on the bottom the dive covers a lot of ground in a short time, and it ends the way drift dives do: come off the bottom together, deploy a marker on the ascent and take the safety stop in mid-water while the boat follows the bubbles.

Season follows Mafia Island: Whale shark season peaks October-March; the March-May long rains bring rougher seas and reduced visibility.
Know before you go
- The current is very strong and the entry is the critical moment: a slow descent means missing the site entirely, so go down fast, stay with your buddy and carry a deployable surface marker.
- There is no reference on the ascent once you leave the bottom, so plan the mid-water safety stop with a marker up and a computer you trust.
