The reef slopes slowly rather than dropping, running down to 20 m and beyond, and the dive is a traverse across it rather than a descent. Coral blocks stand on the sandy bottom at intervals, and those are what the route joins up: each one holds fish and gives a fixed point to work around before crossing the open sand to the next. Schools move over the blocks, so it is worth stopping and letting them settle rather than swimming through.

Depth is a choice here. The gradient is gentle enough that a team can stay shallow and still see the same terrain, or drop to the deeper end early and climb back through the blocks as the dive goes on.
