Belgian North Sea — Nieuwpoort

An upright steamship and a German destroyer a boat ride from Nieuwpoort

Belgian North Sea diving is wreck diving: a steamship, warships and a lightship on the sandy seabed of the southern North Sea, reached on day boats from Nieuwpoort harbour and dived at slack water. The upright Italian steamship Pepinella lies intact in 30 m, and divers come for wreck history: a German destroyer, a torpedoed liner and Dunkerque evacuation losses within reach of one harbour.

About diving in Belgian North Sea — Nieuwpoort

Boat dives here start in Nieuwpoort, from boats moored on the river in the old town. A day trip lasts between 12 and 14 hours. Diving happens only at slack water, so the crew works out the dive times in advance and sets the departure hour around them, which shifts from day to day. The skipper chooses the wrecks, and the weather has the final word on whether the boat sails at all. Weekday trips, Monday to Friday, reach sites beyond day-trip range off the French and English coasts.

The seabed off Flanders is sand, with banks littering the southern end of the North Sea, and the wrecks on it act as nurseries and shelters for marine life. The Pepinella shows the pattern: big shoals of bib swarm about, pollack hang off bow and stern, conger eels fill most suitable holes and the hull is alive with plumose anemones. Visibility can improve through a dive as the tide slackens and turns, while a spring tide lifting sand off the banks clouds the water.

This is diving for wreck divers comfortable in cold, tidal water at around 30 m, with the patience to lose days to weather. Technical and recreational divers both book places on the trips. Wrecks are for looking, not collecting: the French authorities enforce laws against divers removing anything from any wreck in French waters, and the Bruno Heinemann, off Cap Gris-Nez, is a German war grave.

Dive types & marine life

Bib and horse mackerel gather around the wrecks in numbers, and spider crabs are plentiful on the Belgian ones. Large schools of sea bass also turn up, but they are not wreck residents: they pass through on migration to and from their southern spawning grounds.
