E-6

A pinnacle climbing 900 m to within a metre of the surface

E-6 is a seamount in the narrowest part of Bligh Water's Vatu-i-Ra channel, rising sheer from a base at 900 m and more to a tip that comes within a metre of the surface. Current funnelled between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu flushes two flanks of the pinnacle, while soft corals and fans cover the sheltered lee side where the liveaboard NAI'A moors. Barracuda, trevally and surgeonfish school where the water runs.

The dive

The pinnacle stands on its own in the middle of the channel, so the descent is into blue until the wall resolves alongside you. Which face you work depends on the water: the two sides the current flushes are where the fish hold, and the lee side, where NAI'A ties in, carries the soft corals and fans. The tip of the mount comes to less than a metre below the surface, so the shallow end of the dive is spent on top of the seamount rather than hanging under a boat.

Cut into the wall is the Cathedral, a large swim-through where sunlight filters down from above and brings out the colour in the gorgonians and sponges covering the sides. Below it the rock keeps going far past anything recreational — the base is at 900 m and more, about 3,000 ft — so the dive is a traverse of the top of the mount rather than a descent of it. Out on the flushed flanks, schooling barracuda, trevally and surgeonfish hold in the current, with hammerheads and eagle rays turning up occasionally, and anthias and fusiliers massed over the reef.

After dark the site changes hands. Crustaceans come out across the coral, several big lobsters and arrowhead crabs among them, and the green lights of the numerous flashlight fish drift over the reef — the part of a night dive here that divers tend to remember. The shallow summit keeps the night dive simple, since there is no need to go deep to find anything.

Background

Rob, of the liveaboard NAI'A, found E-6 from the air, having chartered a private plane to scout for dive sites in waters boats did not normally work. Mount Mutiny, four miles away, came from the same search. E-6 is now one of Fiji's best known dive sites, and sites of this kind are a large part of why divers choose a Bligh Water liveaboard over a resort-based trip.

Season follows Bligh Water & Vatu-i-Ra: Apr–Oct is the dry season with the best visibility; Nov–Mar is warmer but brings cyclone risk and rougher crossings.

Know before you go

  • Current runs on two flanks of the pinnacle and only the lee side is sheltered; check which face is being dived in the briefing and start upcurrent of it.
  • The seamount stands alone in mid-channel with its base at 900 m and more, so a diver who comes off the rock has no bottom reference and nothing to swim back down to.

Questions divers ask

How deep is E-6?+

The tip of the pinnacle rises to less than a metre below the surface and its base is at 900 m and more, about 3,000 ft, so recreational diving works the top of the wall rather than the whole seamount.

What will you see at E-6?+

Schooling barracuda, trevally and surgeonfish on the flanks the current flushes, with hammerheads and eagle rays occasional, plus anthias, fusiliers and leaf scorpionfish on the reef. Soft corals and sea fans cover the sheltered lee side. At night, lobsters, arrowhead crabs and flashlight fish come out.
