Balay Reef is a coral garden that runs into a wall, the face starting at about 5 m and dropping to around 60, with a stretch of drop-off running roughly 100 m parallel to the shore. Big gorgonian fans stand off it, sponges and hard and soft coral fill the rest, and the wall is holed with small caves and overhangs. Napoleon wrasse turn up here more often than elsewhere on the island.

The dive
The dive opens over coral garden rather than on the lip: hard and soft coral in good condition, with the ground running out from the shallows before the edge appears. From there the wall takes over, topping out around 5 m and falling to something like 60, and the drop runs roughly a hundred metres parallel to the shore, which is a long enough stretch to make one pass in one direction the whole dive.
The face is covered — large gorgonian sea fans standing well out from it, barrel sponges wedged between them, and hard and soft coral over everything else — and it is cut with small caves and overhangs to look into as you pass. Working it slowly turns up frogfish in the sponges and nudibranchs through the coral, while reef fish hold along the face and the occasional Napoleon wrasse comes past off the wall.
As with Cabilao's other drops, the number that matters is the one you agree on the boat. Sixty metres is where the wall ends, not where the dive should, and there is nothing on the face to stop a slow slide deeper while you are looking at fans. Plan a maximum, keep the coral garden in reserve for the shallow end of the dive, and finish over it.

Season follows Cabilao: Dived year-round; Nov–Jun is the main season and the low season runs roughly May–Oct, when the south-west monsoon works the exposed sides.
Know before you go
- The wall drops to around 60 m with no shelf to stop on — fix a maximum before entry and treat the deep face as a traverse rather than a descent.
Questions divers ask
How deep is Balay Reef?+
The wall begins at about 5 m and descends to roughly 60 m. That is past recreational limits, so the dive is run along the upper face at an agreed maximum, with the coral garden on top for the shallow end.
Where exactly is Balay Reef?+
No operator publishes a position for it beyond "one of the walls around Cabilao", so the map here shows the island rather than a pin. Resorts on the west coast reach it as a short boat hop.
