Salto di Tiberio
A wall dive below the cliff of Tiberius' legend
Salto di Tiberio lies below the cliff near Villa Jovis from which, in popular legend, the emperor Tiberius had unwanted slaves and guests thrown into the sea. Underwater it is a wall dive in clear, bright water, with gorgonians and colourful sponges along the cliff.
Also known as Tiberius' Drop, Tiberius Leap, Tiberius Jump.

The dive
Boats anchor in the small bay under the cliff. The dive leaves the shallows of the bay on a gentle slope that grows steeper as divers swim on with the cliff on their right, until the bottom drops vertically to 45 m; dives go to 40 m. The clear water makes it a bright dive, full of life, with red and yellow gorgonians, many kinds of colourful sponges and fish hiding in the holes.
On the way back up, the shallower walls are completely covered in Astroides calycularis, and the last minutes can be spent over the posidonia meadow below the boat.
