Seven Sisters

Seven separate coral pinnacles make up the sisters, running from 5 m at the top down to sand at 28 m, where the Tasu II lies. She is a decommissioned long-line fishing vessel about 30 m from bow to stern, sunk deliberately in the late 1990s and sitting upright on her keel. The shallow tops hold reef fish and turtles; the wreck brings barracuda and groupers.

Also known as Tasu II Wreck, Tasu II, Seven Sisters / Tasu II.

The dive

The Tasu II is the deep end of the site. She sits upright on her keel on the sandy bottom in about 28 m, next to the coral pinnacles, roughly 30 m from bow to stern, and dives usually drop to around 25 m to work her over. Chevron barracuda circle above the wreck, groupers hide out inside the superstructure, and lionfish, pipefish and nudibranchs have made a sanctuary of the hull. Zebra sharks are often found resting on the sand just out from the pinnacles.

From the wreck the dive moves onto the coral. A network of seven separate pinnacles makes up the sisters, and their shallower ends, between 5 m and 10 m, carry reef fish, turtles and whitetip reef sharks. Octopus, flatworms, shrimp, moray eels, gobies, basslets, anthias and crinoids all work the rock, so this is a site that rewards slowing down between the towers rather than covering all seven.

The final sister holds the longest passage on the site: you enter the swim-through at 14 m and come out at 8 m in the middle of the pinnacle cluster. That puts you in the shallows with gas in hand for the last of the dive, where whitetip and blacktip reef sharks pass through and the water between the towers is the easiest place to hold position and watch.

Background

The Tasu II was a decommissioned long-line fishing vessel, purposefully sunk in the late 1990s on the sandy bottom at the Seven Sisters dive site, where she still lies upright on her keel in about 28 m of water. At roughly 30 m from bow to stern she is now as much reef as wreck: groupers hold inside the superstructure, chevron barracuda school above the hull, and lionfish, pipefish and nudibranchs have taken over the rest of her.

Season follows Beqa Lagoon: Bull shark season runs May to September and tigers are likeliest June to August; in the November to April wet season, bad weather can cancel the shark dive.

Know before you go

  • The Tasu II lies in about 28 m, deep enough that bottom time on her is short: plan the wreck first and leave the pinnacles for the rest of the dive.
