ORP Groźny

A Soviet-designed submarine chaser where eels and large pike have settled

ORP Groźny is a former Polish anti-submarine vessel built to a Soviet design and scuttled in the Gulf of Gdańsk to train military divers. The metal hull rests at about 18 m, free of nets and currents, and is relatively easy to explore. Divers come for the intact warship shape and the life that has moved into it.

Also known as ORP Grozny, Groźny, Grozny.

The dive

The upper structure of the Groźny begins at 10 m and the hull rests at about 18 m, touching 18.5 m at its deepest. The hull and its two-storey superstructure are very well preserved, and the wreck stands on an even keel. Near the superstructure a hatch looks into the engine room, and just forward of the engine spaces a narrow corridor can be swum from one side to the other. Eels and large pike have settled on the wreck, and mussels, barnacles and hydroids grow over the steel.
