Nederland
Schooner lost at Marhällan, outside Mariehamn, a week before Christmas 1917
The Nederland was a Dutch schooner, about 35 m long and 9 m wide, that sank on 18 December 1917 at Marhällan, outside Mariehamn, with a cargo of hand-carved cobblestones. What a river sailing barge was doing in Åland waters in the middle of a war remains something of a mystery.

The dive
The wreck rests at the edge of the Marhällan shoal at 20–24 m, where visibility varies from 5 m to 15 m. On the hull, a complete anchor windlass, the fallen mast, the deadeyes and a magnificent transom are all still there to see.
