Shag Rock

A rock that shows at low tide and disappears at high

Area photo: Javier · CC BY 4.0

Shag Rock sits just out from the main beach of the reserve, close enough that the swim to it is part of the warm-up rather than the dive. The rock shows above water at low tide and is covered at high, and the water over and around it runs 3 to 5 m depending on where the tide is. Behind it, sandy pathways thread between standing kelp.

The dive

Walk down to the sand and swim out from the main beach; the site is only just offshore. At low tide the rock is above water and gives you something to aim at, so line up on it before you go under — at high tide it is covered and you are navigating on a bearing instead. Depth over and around it runs 3 to 5 m, which puts the whole dive inside the first few metres of water column.

Behind the rock the bottom opens into sandy pathways with kelp standing either side of them, and those lanes are the obvious route to follow. Drop onto the sand, work them at whatever depth the tide has left you, and keep the shore on one side so the return leg stays short. Nothing here needs a plan beyond that: the depth caps the dive long before your gas does.

Season follows Goat Island: Jan–Apr is warmest and clearest as the East Auckland Current pushes south; winter is cold, green and often blown out.

Know before you go

  • The rock covers at high tide and stops being a surface marker, so take a bearing off the beach before descending rather than expecting to see it.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Shag Rock?+

Between 3 and 5 m depending on the tide. No deeper figure is published for the site, and the rock itself breaks the surface at low water.

Do you need a boat to dive Shag Rock?+

No. The site is just out from the main beach of the reserve, so it is dived as a shore entry and a short surface swim.
