Percy's Hole is an inshore rocky reef on the headland just north of the beach at Rooi-els, 18 km south of Gordon's Bay. It is one of the best known sites on the east side of False Bay, with varied topography, walls, a swim-through and a small cavern, and a wide range of invertebrates and nudibranchs.

The dive
Shore divers enter in a small, well-protected side gully south of the main inlet, swim out to the gap between the rocks at the gully mouth and descend. The subtidal shoreline is unusually steep, so 14 m is reached within a short swim of the entry. The bottom across the site is generally from 14 m to 20 m, and a long swim out reaches sand at 23 m. On the boat dive from Gordon's Bay the profile usually stays within 18 m.
With the shore wall kept on the right, the scenic route runs along the base of the reef to a swim-through under huge wedged boulders, then follows the high offshore reef round and back to the shore wall and the gully mouth. Turning left at the gully instead leads along a stepped wall with an overhang at its base, a short route used for night dives. A small cavern lies in a gully on the north side of the cove.
The reefs carry kelp, sea fans, soft corals, noble coral, sponges and colonial ascidians, and the nudibranch list is long: gas flame, inkspot, silver-tipped, giraffe-spot and orange dorids among them. Doublesash butterflyfish, shoals of strepies, and puffadder shysharks turn up, Cape fur seals are frequently seen in small numbers, and a resident short-tail stingray lives here. Visibility of 3 to 5 m is common, with occasional days of 10 m or more.

Season follows Gordon's Bay & Rooi-Els: Diving runs mostly in summer, when the weather permits, with some good days in other seasons and an occasional winter dive.
Know before you go
- South westerly swell brings surge and a rough exit at the gully; check the swell period and size before the walk down.
- A high tide with moderate swell can set up a rip out of the side gullies; use an alternative exit or pull in along the bottom.
- The path to the gully is steep, rough and slippery when wet; walk it carefully in full kit.

Mostly, yes. The entry gully is well protected but takes some effort to reach from the road, and boats from Gordon's Bay make it a long ride.
