Lahami Bay House Reef

A walk-in reef with a 10-minute block and a turtle seagrass meadow

The Lahami Bay house reef is walked in from the beach at the resort's dive base, and it splits into two dives. The north side has a coral block set off the main reef that you can circle in about ten minutes, with a maximum depth of 12 m, which is why the base uses it for training. The south side runs out along a rope to Banana Reef.

The dive

North first: from the left shoulder of the reef there is a block set slightly away from the main body, and you can circle it in about ten minutes. Nothing here is deeper than 12 m, which is why the base runs training dives on this side - enough structure to give a new diver something to look at, shallow enough that the dive is governed by gas rather than depth.

The south side is the longer swim. A rope leads out to Banana Reef, a set of rock formations sitting off a large seagrass meadow, with more formations visible a short way beyond it. The seagrass is what makes the dive: turtles feed on it regularly, along with rays of several kinds including large ones, and small whitetip reef sharks circle the rocks at Banana Reef.

Season follows Hamata & Wadi Lahami: May to October is the calm window, with much less wind; diving runs all year, but sea state is wind-driven and can reroute a day.
