Houbihu
A 13-18 m slope of sand and mixed soft and hard coral

Houbihu is the harbour on the south-west corner of the Hengchun peninsula, and the dive is the ground outside it: a gently descending slope of sand with coral reef rock set into it, running from about 13 to 18 metres. Coral coverage along the slope is high and the community is mixed, soft and hard species growing together on the rock that breaks up the sand.
Also known as Houbihu Harbour, 後壁湖.

The dive
The profile does most of the work here. The bottom falls away gradually rather than in steps — sand with coral reef rock set into it — and the lower part of the slope sits in 13 to 18 metres, which keeps the whole dive inside recreational limits. There is no wall to follow and no route to memorise: you work out across the sand, pick up the line of coral rock, and come back shallower along it.
What holds the attention is the coral. Coverage across this stretch is high and the community is mixed, soft and hard species growing together on the rock that interrupts the sand, so there is a line of structure to follow rather than a bare bottom, and the open sand between the outcrops rewards searching slowly rather than covering ground.
Houbihu is a working port as well as a dive site. The harbour takes 350 fishing vessels, with the fishing fleet on the outer side and a 120-berth yacht dock inside, so boat movements decide where you enter and where it is sensible to surface. The water is also inside Kenting National Park's regulated zone, where the park sets out the type, area, timing and conduct of permitted water recreation — worth checking before the day rather than at the slipway.

Season follows Kenting: Apr–Jun and October are best; typhoons hit Jul–Sep and the north-east monsoon from November closes the exposed east coast.
Know before you go
- Boat traffic: the harbour handles 350 fishing vessels plus a 120-berth yacht dock, so stay out of the channel and surface under an SMB.
- Park rules bite here — Kenting National Park restricts the type, area, timing and conduct of water activities, so confirm what is permitted before you dive.

Questions divers ask
How deep is Houbihu?+
The slope runs from about 13 to 18 metres, dropping away gradually over sand mixed with coral reef rock, so the dive sits comfortably inside Open Water limits.
Is Houbihu good for beginners?+
The depth and the terrain suit them: a gentle slope that bottoms out around 18 metres, with no wall and no route to navigate. The complication is the harbour itself, which is busy with fishing boats and yachts.
