Sunabe Seawall
Stair entries onto soft coral, 5 to 20 m, day and night
The concrete sea wall along Sunabe, a ward of Chatan on the west coast, is the busiest shore-diving strip on Okinawa: stair entries straight off the wall, dive shops the length of it, and a soft-coral bottom that works from about 5 m out to 20 m. Damselfish and three kinds of clownfish meet you in the shallows, and the sand further out holds shrimpgobies and jawfish.
Also known as Sunabe Sea Wall, 砂辺, Sunabe No. 1.

The dive
The entry is the wall itself. Steps drop from the seawall onto the beach and you walk in; at Sunabe No. 1 there is a chain running out to deeper water that try-dive and course groups hold on the way, which is a fair measure of how gentle the ground is. The California Side, one entry south, is the quieter of the two. Either way there is no boat, no mooring and no crossing to make, which is why the strip carries the traffic it does and why the shops in Chatan and Kadena all base themselves here.
Out from the wall the bottom is soft coral, and it is the reason to dive Sunabe rather than an incidental: the growth on the California Side is rated among the best on the island, a field of pink, orange and yellow. Damselfish come at you first — sergeant majors and their relatives — then clownfish, three species of them including the anemonefish everyone recognises. Mackerel scad pass in midwater. Nudibranchs, tube worms, anemone crabs and shrimp fill in whatever the guide slows down for.
Keep swimming and the coral gives way to sand at around 20 m, and the sand is the other half of the site: yasha and blackray shrimpgobies at their burrows, jawfish holding station, broadclub cuttlefish in season. The good parts stay shallow, so a long, slow dive works better here than a deep one. It is also the standard night dive on this coast — the shops nearest the wall run it as their first choice after dark.

Season follows Okinawa: Divable year-round; Mar–Jun and Oct–Nov are calmest, while Jul–Sep is typhoon season and winter northerlies close the west coast.
Know before you go
- The wall is a surf spot as well as a dive entry, so the same stretch of water carries board traffic.
- The local point guide lists the Sunabe No. 1 entry as closed for construction work; confirm which stairway is open before you carry gear down.

Questions divers ask
How deep is the Sunabe Seawall dive?+
The point is listed at 5 to 20 m, and the operators who dive it daily put the useful range within about 18 m with most of the good ground in the shallows. Depth here is a function of how far offshore you swim, not of where you enter.
Can you dive Sunabe Seawall at night?+
Yes, and it is the standard night dive on this coast. The shops based along the wall run it as their first choice after dark, and the shallow soft-coral ground close to the entry suits a slow night dive.
