Hiroshi Point

Very large hard corals inside 6 m, straight off the beach

Hiroshi Point is a beach-entry dive on Kosrae's fringing reef, worked over a reef top covered with very large hard corals inside 6 m of the surface and broken up by patches of sand. Large schools of parrotfish and eagle rays pass over it, and the shallow profile keeps the site open to divers of every level, by day and after dark.

The dive

The entry is off the beach, and the reef top starts shallow enough that most of the dive happens inside the first 6 m. Very large hard corals cover the top of the reef, mixed with sandy patches between them. There is no descent to manage and no profile to plan, which is why the resort runs certification dives here and why snorkellers get much the same view of the site as divers do.

Fish traffic over the shallows is the other half of it. Large schools of big parrotfish work the coral, eagle rays cross through, and tropical fish are on the reef in numbers. Look closer and the site turns macro — the operator calls it macro heaven — and the sand between the coral heads is where that pays off. It is also one of the island's night dives, entered off the same beach after dark.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Hiroshi Point?+

Shallow. The hard coral that makes the site sits within 6 m of the surface on the reef top, so the dive is spent in the shallows rather than descending — which is also why it doubles as a snorkelling spot.

Can beginners dive Hiroshi Point?+

Yes. The beach entry is easy and the reef top is shallow, which is why the resort uses Hiroshi Point for certification dives as well as for fun dives and night dives.
