Walung Coral Gardens

Hard coral on a low-current reef top at 12 to 18 m

Walung Coral Gardens is the hard-coral dive of Kosrae's west coast: a steep sloping wall whose reef top, between 12 and 18 m, holds the coral the site is dived for. Little to no current makes it a good dive for photography and one the operator recommends to novice divers, with sharks and other large animals crossing the edge below.

The dive

The site is a steep sloping wall, and sharks and other large ocean-going animals do cross the edge of it, but the operator is clear that the dive itself sits above them. The reef top between 12 and 18 m is where the hard coral is and where the time goes: a dense collection of it, thick enough that working one stretch slowly returns more than swimming the length of the site.

Little to no current is the other half of the appeal. It is what makes this a photography dive as much as a coral dive, and what puts it within reach of novice divers. The life on the reef top is small and stays put — tropical fish over the coral, shrimps in it, octopus tucked into the structure — and nothing about the profile pushes you deep, so a tank goes a long way here.

Yes. The operator rates it a good dive for novice divers: there is little to no current, and the part of the site worth diving is the reef top between 12 and 18 m rather than the wall dropping away below it.
