Iguri

Two fused rocks where yellowfin amberjack swarm around the group

Iguri is a rock-and-sand site off Nishinoshima, built around two rocks stuck together on a flat bottom of sand and seaweed patches. It looks plain at first, a scene typical of the Sea of Japan, but divers after macro life find nudibranchs and small crabs in the weed while schools of fish work the rocks.

The dive

Divers descend to about 16 m at the anchor, which sits in the gap between the two rocks, so the site is simple to navigate. Around the rocks the bottom flattens out at about 20 m into sand with scattered patches of seaweed.

Searching the leafy green seaweed turns up many colourful nudibranchs, orange starfish and shy little crabs that scuttle off as a diver approaches. Schools of chicken grunts patrol the rocks, yellowfin amberjack swarm around the group and damselfish gather in clouds.
