Lobster Wall

Start on top of the reef and work your way down gently along the sloping face, which runs to about 20 metres; the normal working depth here is 10 to 25. The rock is full of holes and cracks, and the cracks are the reason for the name — numerous lobsters love to hide in them, and they can often be spotted at the entrances to the small caverns along the way.

Behind the main wall is a network of tunnels, and at around 40 metres there is a cave full of life. Both are past the normal profile here: treat them as overhead environments and stay outside unless you carry the training, gas and lights for them. Out on the open face, nudibranchs are the constant — this whole area is thick with them and Lobster Wall is no exception — alongside stonefish, several types of pipefish, seahorses and peacock mantis shrimp. Turtles pass by, or stop briefly to say hello, and a flamboyant cuttlefish is the find people hope for.

Current is the variable. It is often light, but it can be strong, in which case the sensible dive is to stop fighting it and cruise along the reef in the direction it is running, ending wherever you finish rather than back where you started. Visibility over the reef is generally 10 to 20 metres. On the way back up, anemones sway along the shallower reef with their resident clownfish darting in and out.
