The Old Jetty
Encrusted pylons and frogfish on old timber at 12 metres

A decommissioned wooden jetty on Mabul's leeward side, now one of the island's richest macro habitats. The dive is a slow crawl up a set of encrusted pylons from sand at around 12 metres, hunting frogfish, ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorses. The structure kills the current, so bottom time is the only limit, and it works as a night dive too.
Where it is and how deep

The dive
Descend to the sandy bottom at around 12 metres and work your way back up, taking the pylons one at a time. Each is a vertical wall of life, encrusted with sponges, tunicates and featherstars over old timber, and almost everything worth finding is on the structure rather than out on the open sand. Distance covered means nothing here; a single pylon can hold a full tank's worth of subjects.
Frogfish in red, yellow and even electric blue sit motionless on the timber, and they will not move for you, so the dive is a matter of looking rather than chasing. Ghost pipefish hover near the crinoids, their elongated bodies swaying with the surge, and the sandy patches beneath the jetty hold pairs of ornate lobster with white and purple banded antennae waving from crevices. On the sea fans, look for pygmy seahorses, pale pink or yellow and barely distinguishable from the polyps they mimic.
The jetty's structure breaks any current, so you can take as long as you like, and the site changes after dark: squid hunt in the open water beyond the piles, and the wooden uprights become hunting grounds for lionfish and leaf scorpionfish. Take a torch either way, because most of what is here is tucked into the growth on the pylons rather than sitting out in the open.

Season follows Mabul & Kapalai: Diveable year-round with little seasonal variation; muck subjects are present in all months.
Know before you go
- Old timber and encrusting growth snag hoses and camera lanyards, and lionfish and leaf scorpionfish sit on the uprights; hold position off the pylons rather than steadying yourself on them.
Questions divers ask
How deep is The Old Jetty on Mabul?+
The sand under the jetty sits at around 12 metres, and most of the dive is spent shallower than that, working back up the pylons.
