A Kapalai sand flat — not the Eel Garden sites of the same name elsewhere — sloping from 5 metres down to 20. Hundreds of garden eels stand out of their burrows across the open bottom, peacock mantis shrimps tend their own, and juvenile painted frogfish the size of a thumbnail sit on the sand between them.

The dive

The bottom is a vast, gently sloping sand flat that begins in just 5 metres and drops to 20, so the dive is a long slow descent across open ground rather than a route between features. Hover neutral and you will see them: hundreds of garden eels swaying from their burrows like seagrass in a breeze. Approach carelessly and they vanish in a coordinated flash, leaving a field of empty holes; wait motionless for a minute and they slowly re-emerge, bobbing their heads to assess you.

Between the eel beds, peacock mantis shrimps tend their burrows, bulbous eyes tracking your every move, and octopus trails lead to tucked-away dens. On the sand, juvenile painted frogfish no bigger than a thumbnail mimic small sponges and are the hardest find of the dive. Finish on the reef edge nearby, which holds ornate ghost pipefish and schools of barracuda. Bring a macro lens; this is a slow, meditative search rather than a swim.
