Castles sits on Osprey Reef's Western Wall, between Admiralty and North Horn, on a stretch where the reef breaks into gullies and trenches rather than one clean face. Caves large and small cut the structure and one overhang is filled with gorgonian fans, while the shallow lagoon area steps down to 30 metres at the lip of the 1000 metre wall.

The dive
The profile here is an unusual one for Osprey Reef. Instead of a single sheer face, the ground breaks into a large number of gullies and trenches weaving between the turrets and towers of the reef, so you work through terrain rather than along a wall. Follow the cuts outward and the shallow lagoon area gradually descends to 30 metres, where it meets the edge of the 1000 metre wall.
The area is riddled with caves, large and small, and holds an overhang filled with gorgonian fans. Whitetip reef sharks and a giant Queensland grouper are among the animals the site is known for, along with clown triggerfish, scribbled pufferfish, soldierfish, moray eels and garden eels. Painted crayfish, blennies and gobies reward anyone who works the structure slowly on the way back into the shallows.

Season follows Osprey Reef: Coral Sea crossings run in the calmer dry season; cyclone risk and rough seas suspend trips Jan–Feb, with hammerhead numbers building Sep–Dec.
Know before you go
- Caves and an overhang cut the structure, so stay in the daylight zone unless you are trained and equipped for overhead diving.
- The lagoon slope ends at the lip of a 1000 metre wall with no bottom beneath it, so set a depth before you drop in and hold it.
